ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) — Some people call it a sport, others call it a hobby, but for UT Arlington brothers Anthony and Brian Brooks — it’s simply called Speedcubing. They’re internationally known as master Rubiks Cube solvers; producing some of the fastest times to back it up.

The brothers compete in international as well as domestic competitions. Recently, the eldest brother, Anthony set his own competition record solving the Rubiks Cube at 6.4 seconds.

“At the end of the day it’s just something we’ve been putting a lot of time into,” said Anthony.

His popularity within the Speedcubing community is soaring so much that even Volkswagen has featured him in a commercial.

“The amount of time it takes me to do it with two hands it takes him with one,” said Brian, 17, about his brother’s skill.

The UTA Freshman said he has plenty of time to try and catch up to his 22-year-old brother; a senior at the same university.

The secret to solving the cubes so fast, according to Anthony, is memorizing the algorithms. “When we see this pattern we’ll do these moves to set up something good later on.”

The brothers consistently rank high in competitions. Recently they placed 2nd and 4th in a competition in Phoenix last weekend.

They said they hope their talent will continue to evolve into a lucrative career.
