ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – This is the third year in a row Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson got into a patrol car on Christmas Day and hit the streets.

He does this so a much less senior officer can be home with loved ones.

This year he hosted a video contest asking his officer why they should have the day off.

27-year-old officer Tonia Crutcher won.

“At the end of the day it’s just a very small token of my deepest appreciation for the men and women that were the badge and do the job and sacrifice all throughout the year,” says Chief Johnson.

Johnson says he got the idea to do this from a detective he worked for early in his career.
