Someone shot and killed Sara Mutschlechner in the early morning on New Year’s Day.

Students packed the area outside the Greek Life Center Saturday night to pay tribute to their fellow UNT classmate. They remembered a young life cut short in an apparent case of road rage that has police working to find her killer.

Chris Chaillot said he and Mutschlechner immediately bonded at school.

“She was a connector. She was someone that always made people smile, always made people laugh and just have a good time no matter what you were doing,” Chaillot said.

Mutschlechner died Friday morning after a ride home from a New Year’s Eve party turned deadly.

Police say an SUV carrying men she may have met at the party pulled up next to her near at the intersection of Elm Street and University Drive. The men exchanged brief words before one of them opened fire, hitting Mutschlechner in the head.

As the investigation continues to find her killer, loved ones remember the young student for her friendship and the future that looked so promising.

“I believe that Sara would want us to remain positive,” Mutschlechner’s friend Jordan Roberts said. “Sara’s positivity and spunk was such a light in our lives, so it’s only appropriate that we together light our candles to remember that no amount of darkness will ever and could ever dim the light that shines on in Sara’s memory.”

“She was that kind of person that brought you together and made you smile,” Chaillot added, “and you never walked away from Sara without a memory, without remembering her. You never forgot Sara.”

School officials say this week a UNT flag will fly at half-staff for seven days to honor Sara’s time at the university.
