TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) – Terrell Police say a police Captain exchanged shots with a man in a car in a parking lot in the 300 block of Tanger Drive Thursday around 1:15 p.m.READ MORE: Leaders Logon For Virtual Interfaith Meeting Supporting Congregation Beth Israel In Colleyville
The man suffered at least one gunshot wound to the center of the chest and was quickly flown to Parkland Hospital.
No police officers or other civilians were injured.
Minutes earlier, the Terrell Police Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a citizen reporting a “suspicious” man, 25, with reddish-blonde hair, wearing a gray zip-up jacket walking around in the parking lot of the Applebee’s Restaurant.
The caller said the man was was behaving suspiciously and that his face was “contorted in a downcast manner.”
The caller said he was last seen in a maroon vehicle and the caller left the scene.
Two Terrell Police Captains were just finishing lunch in the area and overheard the call on the police radio. The two Captains, driving an unmarked vehicle, later observed the 2004 maroon Ford 4dr, with Georgia tags, backing into a handicapped parking space in another parking lot in the area.READ MORE: DOJ Wants Oath Keepers Founder Elmer Stewart Rhodes To Remain In Jail Pending Trial
The Ford was driven by a man who fit the description of the suspect.
As a Police Captain approached the driver’s door, at least one gunshot rang out and the suspect pointed the gun in the direction of the officer.
Police say the officer fired a single self-defense shot at the man.
The Texas Rangers and the Terrell Police Criminal Investigations Division personnel are investigating the shooting.
Captain A.D. Sansom will be placed on routine administrative leave, as is standard procedure for these incidents.
