ALLEN (CBS 11) — Fuel prices are down, but there’s another way people are getting ripped off at the gas pump.

Allen police have released dramatic video of thieves sneaking into cars while drivers are filling up their tanks.

A crime captured by a security camera at the Race Trac on Exchange Parkway shows thieves driving up beside Marcia Applegate’s vehicle and grabbing her purse from the driver-side door while she was on the other side getting gas.

She made a daring effort to stop them. But they were able to drive off with more than $200 in cash, credit cards and her recently purchased concealed handgun.

Allen police say the thieves did the same thing to two other women this week, one of them in Plano.

Applegate plans to buy another concealed handgun and start wearing it.

“Lock your doors when you’re getting gas? I mean, we shouldn’t have to do that, no. But we live in a messed up world right now,” Applegate said.

Police did get a good description of the vehicle but so far do not have any suspects.
