HENDERSON COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A police standoff in Henderson County ended Wednesday afternoon.. It happened along Texas State Highway 274 and County Road 4044.
According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect fired at law enforcement during the standoff.
When the suspect again pointed a weapon in the direction of officers, shots were fired at the suspect in response to the threat, according to DPS.
The suspect was struck and died at the scene.
The investigation is being led by Texas Rangers.
CBS 11 News confirmed the standoff was a result of a domestic dispute between neighbors.
There was allegedly an argument between two men and one person shot the other in the face with a shotgun. The shooter then barricaded himself inside a home. The injured neighbor was taken to a local hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, and was treated and released.
State Troopers identified the suspect as 56-year-old Anthony Bertoni. Throughout the day people who live nearby told CBS11 Bertoni has often displayed signs on his property with disturbing messages. One neighbor says her family has been harassed by the suspect for years.
Lorree McCoy says in recent days Bertoni posted signs accusing her husband of murder.
“We don’t even know where he came up with it. I mean just like he had signs out there this last week he put up that Justin Bieber’s going to come save the world, and we couldn’t understand that either,” McCoy said.
The section of State Highway-274 that leads to Bertoni’s home remained closed to traffic Wednesday night as Texas Rangers investigated the officer involved shooting.
Deputies had an Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon warrant for the suspect.
