His friends said that he had gone into the Gulf of Mexico with five of his classmates when he was pulled under by the current.

The Coast Guard called off its search this weekend after searching more than 128 square nautical miles. Volunteers with Texas Equusearch Mounted Search and Recovery will take on the case starting its search at daybreak Monday.

Classmate Serah Aguilera placed flowers and a picture of Perez near the front door of the school Sunday. “I just want to have hope,” she said. “Hopefully we get something, anything, news, information — anything.”

Aguilera said that students will be wearing white T-shirts on Monday in honor of Perez.

Perez was in Corpus Christi over the weekend with classmates for a SkillsUSA statewide competition. Friends said that Perez played soccer and started working at Olive Garden as soon as he turned 16 years old.
