KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) – Stealing from a Boy Scout trying to raise money for summer camp, Keller Police are searching for the thief who drove off with $600 and a troop leader’s pick-up truck.
Matt Barnes said his son Westin, 7, and the rest of his troop members were outside the Kroger grocery store along the 900 block of Keller Parkway selling coupon cards. When he pulled up his truck to pack the gear of for the day, he left the truck running. Barnes said he had his back to the truck for a minute or two and when he turned around his grey, 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was gone.
“Your heart just falls out,” said Matt Barnes. “For all that hard work to just go driving off into nowhere, it’s terrible.”
Keller Police believe someone jumped into the truck and took it along with all the fundraising money the boys had just earned.
“That’s a real bad blow. It’s one thing to get your vehicle stolen, but to see children’s efforts paying off just gone too…that’s really bad,” said Matt Barnes.
With summer camp right around the corner, Westin and his troop must scramble to find other ways to raise the money.
“I almost cried. I think he may not get his truck back,” said Westin Barnes. “I feel sad because I worked as hard as I can.”
Matt Barnes said it was a tough lesson the young troop had to learn on Saturday.
“How to get your gear boosted is not a part of the Boy Scout tradition,” said Matt Barnes. The stolen truck and money are not the worst part of Matt Barnes. He said what is most devastating is the feeling he let his son down.
“The only good part is nobody got hurt. But that certainly doesn’t’ help the sting,” said Matt Barnes. Keller Police are looking through security camera footage, hoping to learn more about who took the truck.
