DALLAS (CBS11) – For some passengers, airport lines are redefining what it means to be a weary traveler.

“Today I was actually afraid I was going to miss my flight,” said air traveler Juan Contreras.

“We’re pre-check, and the line for pre-check was probably 150 people long,” said air traveler Sherri Cassidy.

“We’re very concerned about unacceptable security checkpoint wait times at many airports throughout the country.  The industry-wide issue has negatively impacted our customer experience at several key Southwest airports including Dallas Love Field,”  said Southwest Airlines spokesperson Thais Hanson in a emailed statement.

The TSA says it’s working hard to decrease passenger wait times.

Congress on Thursday approved $34 million to hire more than 700 new TSA agents by June 1.

But travelers should still be prepared.

“It really is a question of knowing when you’re going to fly and trying to adjust the time you arrive,” says Mark Duebner, Director of Aviation for Dallas Love Field.

Early mornings see the most backups at Dallas Love Field.  Airport officials say they share the public’s grievances.

“It is frustrating from where we sit as an airport. We don’t have direct control. We don’t have a direct hand in how that’s managed,” said Duebner.

Aviation security expert David Divan says heavy crowds in a small area can be a safety risk, or even a possible target for terrorists.

“There are incidents that have occurred recently that suggest that to me more of a threat than normal, simply because there’s going to be a lot of people in one location, and clearly in the world of terrorism, that’s what they’re looking for,” said Divan.

Love Field officials say they are taking additional measures. But the biggest message he hopes travelers receive: give yourself plenty of extra time.

“Our little catch phrase is pack your patience as well as your clothes,” says Duebner.

The TSA says record travel volumes are the main reason for the congestion. They are encouraging travelers to enroll in trusted traveler programs, such as TSA Pre-Check.
