DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A Preston Hollow family’s security camera system caught a thief stealing a package from their front porch.

Sophia Bessera’s children were home at the time. The family didn’t realize the package was stolen until they reviewed the security camera footage. Bessera believes the box may have looked enticing to the thief because of its shape.

“The box was larger and looked flat screen TV-sized. I’m sure they thought it was something much more expensive than it was,” the homeowner explains.

But the joke was on the thief. There was only a toy inside of the box.

“It was a NERF gun; a $25 NERF gun,” she says.

Bessera’s son Oliver Buchanan watched security camera footage in disbelief, as the stranger stole the gift he had picked out himself.

“I just saw a heartless soul,” remarked the 8-year-old.

The NERF gun was meant for Oliver’s classmate and friend whose mother is starting chemotherapy.

“We just wanted to do something special for him,” Oliver explained.

Amazon shipped out another package immediately. Oliver was able to get the thoughtful gift to his friend. Still Bessera says she feels her family’s privacy was violated and worries it wasn’t the thief’s first crime.

“The fact that someone could so brazenly walk on your property while your family is in your home and steal something from you, it isn’t about the [item’s] value,” she says.

Their cameras did capture a clear shot of the toy thief, and of his unique footwear: blue and black toe shoes.

Bessera hopes the thief’s fashion accessory might help earn him some matching handcuffs.

“I hope somebody watching can help identify this guy, notice his webbed shoes or any features and help us catch him and stop him from coming into our neighborhoods and taking our stuff.”
