ROCKWALL (CBS11) – A North Texas lawmaker wants gun-free businesses to be liable if its customers are targeted by an active shooter.

“We know that they go looking for gun free zones,” said State Senator Bob Hall, R-Edgewood. “Someone who intends to do harm with a gun knows that there will be no one in there that can stop them.”

Hall believes businesses have the right to make decisions about its customers, but equates his legislation to fire safety standards.

“When you take a gun away from or someone’s ability to defend themselves… you’re putting them in an unsafe environment,” said Hall.

The language of the bill is still being finalized, but will most likely encompass movie theaters, malls, hotels, schools and bars.

Hall expects to have the legislation ready for the next legislative session in January.

“I’ve had a number of legislators who have said wow…that sounds like a really good idea to me,” said Hall.
