HENNING, Tenn. (AP) — Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley would be turning 95 years old, and celebrations are planned around Tennessee this week.

The author of “Roots,” which was turned into an award-winning miniseries, will be remembered during an event Thursday evening at the Alex Haley Statue in Knoxville. Speakers expected include the city’s mayor and Haley’s grandson.

In West Tennessee, the Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center in Henning will offer free tours on Friday and Saturday. Other events include a health fair and silent auction.

Haley was born August. 11, 1921. He died in 1992.
