MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – Mansfield’s varsity team played with heavy hearts tonight after losing a member of the Tiger community.
John Moran, 15, was a Junior Varsity football player who died just before 1:30 Friday morning at Methodist Mansfield medical hospital. School officials called his sudden death a “tragic accident.”
“He’s a great kid. Loved the game of football and he was just a loving kid,” said Mansfield High sophomore Jonah Whitlock.
Whitlock is one of Moran’s teammates. They played football together since 7th grade, and were teammates on Mansfield ISD’s junior varsity team.
“He was very involved in school. Took a lot of pre AP classes — just a great kid,” said Whitlock.
The Tigers JV team was on the field Thursday and Moran’s teammates said he wasn’t injured during the game.
“It’s really sad, it’s surreal, anybody can die at any moment,” said team mate Dylan Whalen.
Tonight, parents are holding their children a little closer, as this community deals with a difficult reality and the Mansfield police department continues to investigate.
“It’s very sad to see him go but to know that he’s in heaven is very comforting,” said yet another of Moran’s team mates.
Grief counselors will offer support to students at school on Monday.
The Mansfield police department said it’s awaiting the results of the medical examiner’s office as it continues to investigate.
