NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The job of preventing crime is the responsibility of the community. That’s the idea behind National Night Out, a program started in 1984 to encourage partnerships between police departments and the community.

Communities and cities across the country come together annually block parties, cookouts, parades, contests, and kid activities. All of the festivities are attended by local first-responders with the hope of strengthening the relationship between police and families.

More than 600 people are expected at the Jubilee Park and Community Center in east Dallas.

In Fort Worth police are asking residents to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with their neighbors. One of the events in that city will take place at Southside Community Center.
