DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – You can own a piece of Parkland Hospital through a garage sale like you’ve never seen.
More than 6,000 non-medical items from the old hospital are for sale, and some of them date back to when it first opened.
They may look like the remnants of a discard pile, but they once helped comprise the fabric of Parkland Hospital. And when the new hospital opened last year, the items that missed the cut ended up bound for this garage sale.
“We’ve decided to provide this as an opportunity for the public here in the county who have supported us so well to have an opportunity to maybe partake in a little benefit of that,” said Jerry Nickerson, Vice President of Engineering and Program Controls at Parkland Health and Hospital System.
Old file cabinets, refrigerators, office furniture, TVs, iPhones are more are for sale.
Customers said they’re looking for a bargain but also more.
“I am looking for a little piece of memorabilia as well,” said Parkland employee and shopper Melody Hopkins. “I’ve been here for 16 years, so it’ll be great to have a little piece of it.”
“It’s a great reminder that we’re doing a great thing by opening this to the community and obviously diverting it from the landfill,” said Parkland employee and shopper Jessica Barnett.
All the proceeds will go back to Parkland Hospital, and what’s left may show up at a second garage sale next year.
“Maybe the ending of the old Parkland story but certainly the beginning of a new one in our new facility,” sayid Nickerson.
The garage sale is at 2420 Butler in Dallas and is open to the public Friday until 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It’s cash and carry and all sales are final.
