ARLINGTON (CBS11) – Arlington voters decided to build a big, retractable roof stadium for the Rangers on election night. But what they don’t know is what is already in the works to be built on the 200 acres around the Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium, thanks to what is under their feet every time they walk in a ballpark parking lot.

“All of those parking lots all have the utilities and drainage and they are ready to be developed on,” Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams said.

So, the groundwork for development is already built under the properties around the ballpark.

“Now we have the opportunity for us to build more houses, to build more office, restaurant and retail and hotel all exist,” Mayor Williams said.

The mayor said developers have been waiting for the ballpark vote to move forward on plans to build on property in the area. He said he can’t yet identify publicly who he’s talking with, but he can say what they’re talking about — and it could involve AT&T Stadium, too.

“We’re looking at high-rise condominiums,” he said. “We’re looking at more hotels. We’re looking at incredible restaurant/retail opportunities and a world class special event center to complement the already existing one there in Cowboys Stadium and also even development there in the parking lots of the Cowboys stadium which also has the same opportunity.”

The Rangers are already building a new parking lot to replace lost spaces for construction of the Texas Live! entertainment area and Williams said parking garages are a key part of the development plan.

The Rangers are also enlisting the help of its fans for opinions on the features of the new ballpark.
