DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Thousands of veterans across the DFW area have the opportunity to find jobs on Thursday, in an effort to take better care of those who have served our country. Gilley’s in Dallas is hosting a veteran-focused job fair which features some 240 employers.
More than 2,000 job hunters pre-registered for the ‘Hiring Red, White & You!’ event, sponsored by the Veterans Commission and the Texas Workforce Commission. The job fair is open to the public, but focused on recruiting veterans and their spouses to fill some open positions.
The companies participating in Thursday’s hiring event are looking for people of all ages, with jobs ranging from entry level to executive.
Anthony Dillihunt is a U.S. Marine Corp veteran from Dallas looking for work in truck driving or delivery. Life is not easy for veterans, he said, when they are done with their service. Events like this job fair are extremely helpful. “A lot of the people that come out of the military, while they’re in the military, they don’t have a specific job. We come out to a career like this, we have a lot of different opportunities to get involved,” Dillihunt said, “to see people, meet people, and it really helps.”
This is the fifth year for this job fair. It grows bigger each year. The event is open until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. “I think it is our responsibility to make sure that their re-entry into our community includes a well-paying job in a career that has a pathway for growth,” said Linda Davis with Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas. “They’ve made a sacrifice for our country.”
There are two other veteran job fairs happening on Thursday. One at Globe Life Park in Arlington also ends at 2:00 p.m. while an event at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco runs from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Meanwhile, several businesses across the Metroplex are offering freebies to service people in honor of Veterans Day on Friday. Click here to see a list of what is available.
