GREENVILLE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – A 23-month-old child was killed in Hunt County Monday morning after being attacked by a dog, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. deputies responded to the 9900 block of Private Road 3820 in the Easy Living addition regarding a dog bite call.

The first deputy on scene found an infant in the roadway “who had suffered major trauma as a result of a dog attack.”

The child was rushed by ambulance to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Quinlan, but the child did not survive.

Preliminary information shows the child had gotten out of the enclosed yard without family members realizing it and went down the gravel road.

The dog, believed to be a pit bull, was in his yard which was enclosed by a four-foot chain link fence but was able to get out of the yard and attacked the infant in the roadway.

The dog was seized and is being held by a local animal control facility.

“I am heartbroken over this whole matter and my thoughts and prayers are with the family tonight,” Sheriff Randy Meeks said.

Pit bulls are not pets! They attack by pure instinct, no matter how much you think you can train them.

Another child sacrificed for “the love of the dog.” Why is it that so many people today think they can’t life without some worthless fleabag? This monster could easily get out of its pen and did so. The owners should be charged with manslaughter for not adequately containing the beast.

Yeah because the parents of the dirty diaper wearing kid isn’t at fault? Another dog sacrificed for the “love of a child.” The parents of the child should be held responsible and are at fault. What “parent” let’s there 1 year CRAWL out of their yard into the street? Dogs are so much better than kids and faster learners.

Come on man, you are judging a 1-year old kid for making a 1-year old mistake. And accusing this 1-year old victim of wearing a dirty diaper. And judging a parent/situation that you have no idea about . May you always be the perfect person that we all assume you are .

Involved in the legal field for 29 years, Unfortunately Pit Bulls are dangerous and have the most powerful jaws of any dog breed 600 pounds of pressure when they bite down. Once they lock their jaws there is no release. No child should be faced with an attack by these undomesticated animals, why do you think that breed was used as fight dogs. In addition, to judge a parent for a child in a split second who gets away as so many children try. I go back 30 years and recall my son exiting the house as a toddler in a split second of his mom using the restroom. Compassion for the loss of a baby would be a more appropriate response as opposed to blaming a parent.
