Texas has lagged behind most states in setting up a donor registry, but now that it’s easy to sign up, as many as 60 thousand Texans a month are registering to be organ donors. Pam Sylvestry of the Texas Transplant Alliance says it’s not surprising, because the majority of people want to do it as long as it’s easily acceble to them. There are approximately 5 thousand people in North Texas waiting for an organ, and 10 thousand in Texas…so although you sign up on a nationwide registry, certain organs like heart and lungs have a 4 hour time-limit, so they can only travel within the region.
