The Plano council opted to put off a decision on whether to designate 700-thousand dollars in federal grants to pay for a large transitional housing complex for the homeless. The Samaritan Inn of McKinney would run the shelter and has proposed a location on 14th Street in East Plano. But that site requires a zoning change which has not been voted on. Mayor Phil Dyer told the council he thought it best to let the Planning and Zoning Commission finish work on the proposal which would go to the City Council for a final okay. With that in mind, six of the eight council members voted to table the homeless center proposal. A number of neighbors, both business owners and residents, have made their opposition to the 14th Street site clear, asking to have it placed elsewhere.
