Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales: Don't Go "Tinkering"with 14th Amendment

gonzales Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales: Don't Go "Tinkering"with 14th AmendmentSome Republicans are now pushing for the denial of automatic citizenship to the American-born children of illegal immigrants.  But,  Republican former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales just told me it would not be wise to “tinker” with the constitution on this issue.

Listen to the audio below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

Attorney General Gonzales and I also talked about how President Obama is prosecuting the War on Terror.  You can hear the rest of the interview tonight at 7:35 on KRLD.

I don’t think the wording of the 14th amendment guarantees citizenship by being born here. A clarification is in order however. Any person who is born in the USA of non-American parents should have the right to apply for full citizenship at the age of 18, of their own volition. If a person is born here of non-American parents who later become naturalized then that person shall be given full citizenship. Up until that time the child and both parents should not be granted the rights of citizenship as they are illegally in our country.

I had to look it up, and I was wrong. Section 1 starts with “All persons born or naturalized in the United States……are citizens”. WOW, talk about dual citizenship. I suppose the child maintains the citizenship of the country of origin of the parents, just as our children do when born out of the USA (reminded of a recent President). There should at least be something about a loyalty pledge [at 18] before full citizenship is granted. or, at the very least, a renunciation of the previous citizenship [again at age 18]. If a child is born here of parents that are legally here (green card) then by all means let them be citizens.
