A joint House and Senate Committee hears it won’t be easy to get more universities to tier one status.  Like almost everything else more money is needed to jump start Texas emerging research universities on the path of gaining tier one status, but the economy has caused another complication as well.  Many doctoral programs must be added for these universities to move up but right now Higher Education Commissioner Raymond Peredes says that doesn’t make economic sense.  “We also are weary of creating new doctoral programs in Texas when there aren’t any jobs for them to go to.”  Peredes says most of those graduates would go into university teaching jobs and those are in short supply nationwide, not just in Texas.
