Local Rescuers Lauded For Saving Drowning Woman
Three Fort Worth Police rookies and a firefighter are hearing the word “hero” mentioned along with their names for helping save a drowning woman, and one another, over the weekend. Late Saturday, witnesses saw the woman dive into a pond next to a Mexican restaurant on the I-35 service road near Western Center Boulevard. When it was immediately clear she was in danger of drowning, one officer went into the murky water after her. But he himself quickly became exhausted trying to calm the panicky, thrashing woman while still wearing his heavy body armor and boots.
Although able to pass the drowning woman to another officer, he then went under himself. A second officer dove to the bottom of the pond and rescued him. Meanwhile, a third officer and fireman were doing CPR on the woman who was taken to JPS Hospital in stable condition.
