North Texas Planned Parenthood Concerned About U.S. House Decision

By Andrea Lucia, CBS 11 News

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Kim Schlossberg is a successful graphic artist, but for much of her youth she struggled, unable to afford health insurance.

“I worked in restaurants. I worked in retail,” she said. “I couldn’t afford to go to a doctor.  o, Planned Parenthood was the only option I had available.”

Schlossberg says she relied on the clinics’ discounted services as her only source of healthcare and received her annual exams there for years.

She worries, though, women today won’t have that option.

“I’m angry and very concerned about this,” she said.

Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill with an amendment singling out the Planned Parenthood organization.

The “Pence Amendment” would cut all federal funding, about $317 million dollars to the non-profit organization.

“It merely prohibits those funds from flowing to the largest abortion provider in America,” said Rep. Mike Pence, who introduced the amendment.

Planned Parenthood has 28 clinics in North Texas, where it provides care to more than 90,000 people a year.

The law already prohibits it from using federal funds for abortion services, but the Pence Amendment seeks to take away funds for family planning and preventative care, as well.

“That’s funding for birth control, for cancer screening, and HIV testing. It’s funding that saves lives and they killed it,” said Planned Parenthood president, Cecile Richards, in an online statement.

The organization has launched a public awareness campaign, called “I Stand With Planned Parenthood”, urging supporters to sign an online petition and contact members of the U.S. Senate who will soon consider the legislation themselves.

“The cut may not stand since the Senate is controlled by Democrats,” said Dr. Allan Saxe, a professor of political science at UT Arlington. “These actions do not amount to large amounts of money but are highly symbolic.”

Schlossberg, though, isn’t taking any chances.

“I’ve signed all the petitions. I’ve donated money. I’m talking to you,” she said.

  • Just Curious

I wonder if the gov’t funds will be reinstated in Planned Parenthood and other programs after the deficit is finally reduced. I mean, they are just temporary cuts, right?

  • Jo Humphrey

Temporary? lol. You know what would REALLY save money? Sending Congress home to “work” via telecommuting. Send the mo’fos home.

  • Douglas

Way to go GOP – cut all funding for Planned Parenthood – and also all funding that will support the additional poor unwanted children that you will help bring into the world. The Republicans and their self righteous religiious right followers are morons. Quit using the budget crisis as an excuse to pass your anti-environment and anti-women agendas you fools.

    • schrodinger

How come NO ONE ever (or seldom ever) talks about adoption? Abortion isn’t the only option for an unplanned pregnancy. I’m familiar with adoption from two sides of the equation and I’m fully competent to say that IT DOES WORK… for everyone involved– especially the baby.

      Just sayin’…

      • Holly

PPNT has partnerships with Edna Gladney and Hope Cottage, and refers thousands of women for adoption and prenatal care every year.

Adoption IS an option, and PP always counsels its patients about it. It’s about having a CHOICE, and that’s one of the choices every woman has.

    • WWW

Douglas, every Republican as well as those in the religious right support adoption for those children who cannot be taken care of by their mothers or fathers. This is the way things were handled for many years until 1973. Planned Parenthood was founded by racist, Margaret Sanger, with the purpose of cleansing the black race. Read about here. Now, PP is their race is the largest customer of PP. Abortion is primarily used as birth control by those who choose immediate gratification over responsibility. The budget crisis has nothing to do with morality.

      • Holly

Wow, WWW, you are incredibly misinformed. Those comments attributed to Margaret Sanger are a fabrication, but unfortunately they won’t go away.
She condemned the American eugenics movement for advocating that the government (and not women) should control who should have and who should not have children.
Margaret Sanger’s healthcare advocacy in the black community during the 1930s was endorsed by The Amsterdam News, the most influential black newspaper in the U.S. at the time — and by the black community’s elder statesman, W.E.B. DuBois.
Her work won the respect of international figures of all races, including the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s shameful that anti-family planning zealots have targeted Sanger, who died decades ago, with their smear campaign. So I’m sorry, WWW, the information you have is incorrect. It’s something anti-choice groups resurrect pretty often, but it’s a lie.

  • Emily

These cuts are only being done to push an idealogical agenda. Poor, uninsured working women NOT having affordable annual exams will lead to increased instances of cancer and STDs which our county government will have to pay for when women are forced to use Parkland as their gynocoligist.

    • Daniel Ecklund

I have no problem with PP if they only provided services to help women. However, we all know its about abortion. The irony is that the founder is worried about “killing” some of their funding..

We spend millions protecting bird eggs in other contries, because we know its life. There’s people kill life, and are also racial at the core. The ratio of abortions are 5 to 1, blacks to whites. The black population, according to PP abortion numbers, should be double what it is now.

And i’m white, and I know this is evil.

  • Aaron

This is just ridiculous. The government should be increasing funding to help murder more babies. Women should be able to murder the children they conceive, b/c it isn’t their fault they got pregnant. It’s that rude baby’s fault, not the women or men who didn’t use proper birth control to prevent the situation. I mean what person in their right mind uses birth control, or the restraint for that matter, to avoid conception of a child. Wow…just wow.

    • Heidi

You want fewer abortions in our community? Cutting access and funding for affordable birth control is NOT the way to do it. Absolutely NO tax dollars go to abortion care, ever. That’s the law. Maybe you didn’t know that… It’s state law.

This isn’t about abortion — it’s life-saving mammograms and cervical cancer screenings, well-woman exams, birth control, flu shots, blood pressure & diabetes screenings, STD screenings, family planning services.

    • Tasha

Interesting that you associate planned parenthood only with abortion. I see that as being ignorant and closed mined. Hope one day that your wife, mother, sister or best friend isn’t a victim of a violent crime. If one may be, I hope that they get pregnant by the assailiant and give birth to someone/something that reminds them of the the incident every single day. I hope you are there to see that expression on the women faces of the disgus they feel by giving birth to someone of a rapist. “Wow to that”. Every person as to stand accountable at judgement day. It is not up to us to place one in heaven or hell, when we yet fall short of his glory. Really…

      • Betsy

        Heidi, Tasha, I so agree with you completely and whole-hearted. I am 56 and biologically past child bearing years, but I promised years ago, that should;
“push come to shove” I would do whatever I was called to do to prevent the government to force their idea’s on us, as WOMEN. This is a passion of mine, and I soooo….believe in our right to choose, in a perfect world, that choice would be for the better for all individuals involved. But ..the fact remains in my opinion that the choice to do with my body is mine alone.

  • Linda

We had been lied to that our tax dollars didn’t go to providing abortions and all of a sudden we find that 317 million dollars are provided. I, for one, don’t want my tax dollars spent on providing abortions. The wellness clinic is only a minute portion of their services and they’ve talked about cutting those services out at most Planned parenthood sites. It’s all about the money machine that abortion is.

    • Robert

You are wrong about that. 98% of what PP does is PREVENTIVE care — affordable birth control, well-woman visits, cervical cancer screenings, breast cancer screenings, flu shots, blood pressure and diabetes screenings, comprehensive family planning and sexuality education.

Abortion care is not a money machine, that’s a nice little lie made up by people who don’t like abortions. You want to make abortions go away? Then help get more preventive care & birth control to people who need it. That’s what PP does.

  • Emily

Oh please Linda! Don’t believe everything you hear on fox news. PP has never used federal money to pay for abortions and they will never stop offering well woman visits. That is the primary service that it offered at the neighborhood clinics.

There are only 3 surgery centers in dfw that perform abortions, laproscopic surgury, etc. Bet Glen Beck didn’t tell you that, did he?

  • Phix

Are you guys even reading? It said in the article that it’s against the law for them to use it for abortion services.

  • schrodinger

Any one of you who are posting here– if you were born after January 22, 1973, you could have been aborted. Instead, someone chose life for you.

If you support abortion or had an abortion, and you were born post 1/22/1973… you are a hypocrite.

    I’m just sayin’…

    • Marilyn

That sounds like something a guy would say.

      • schrodinger

Uh, Marilyn–I’m a woman. A Catholic woman, at that, and an adoptee– and a birth mother who placed a child for adoption. Thus, I practice what I preach.

My child was conceived during marriage that ended due to physical abuse. I believe that children deserve a MOTHER and a FATHER, and that’s what I gave my son.

@ Emily–since you state that women have been having abortions since before “Roe” (true) every woman who seeks an abortion, then, had a mother who chose life. Thus, any woman who chooses death for her unborn child when her own mother chose life for her is a hypocrite. What makes the aborting mother’s own life more special or “worthy” than the life she chooses to snuff out? Are all lives not created by the same God?

      • Betsy

    • Emily

Do you honestly believe that women were not having abortions before they leagalized? The technology didn’t come about post 1973. What Rowe vs Wade did was regulate the practice to make it safe.

  • Emily

Just want to clarify my earlier comment. There are three PP surgery centers to dfw. There are plenty of other places to get on abortion and the costs don’t vary much at all. It’s between $300- $375 no matter where you go.

Even if PP gets cut off it won’t stop women who are determined to end their pregnancy. What it will do is prevent PP from doing all of the other good things it can do in the community.

  • Bible Believing Billy

Where is America in the Bible? Isaiah 5, and in this case, Isaiah 5:22-23 – “Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant men in mixing strong drink, Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away the rights of the ones who are in the right!” Who is more “in the right” than a baby? America MUST stop funding this, or else we will receive the same as those of Isaiah 5.

  • Robert

PP is 99% abortion clinic 1% health clinic. READ THE STATISTICS. They support Pimps they encourage human trafficing and get child prostitutes back on the street faster. That is why they want to pull their funding, PP is DISGUSTING! They are caught on video telling people how to get their teen prostitutes taken care of! They only counselled less than 1000 people in the entire USA to seek adoption as an alternative to abortion. That number includes every PP in the entire USA. Everyone else is given an abortion. The Government gives them $317,000,000 of their $1B budget and somehow you think none of that money goes to pay for any abortions? You are insane if you think they are going to be stripped of their funding because they are perfect wonderul health organization that is just trying to help people.

    • Holly

You are completely wrong. Here in North Texas, we counseled 7,309 women for adoption services and low-cost prenatal care. That’s an AUDITED number.

You want to debate the issue? Get your facts straight. You can’t just make things up and repeat them to magically make them so.

This is NOT about abortion, abortion is less than 2% of what PP does in North Texas. Again, that is a confirmed, audited number.

The other 98%+ is cervical cancer screenings, mammograms, flu shots, well-woman visits, screening for high blood pressure and diabetes, STD screenings and birth control supplies & counseling. If you don’t like abortions, help PPNT get more birth control and preventive healthcare out there to the community.

    • Holly

That’s 7,309 women referred & counseled for adoption services and prenatal care in just one year, for 2010, by the way.

      • Kiki

    • Josh

Yeah, they are a ripoff. It’s all about advertisement. You can make anything sound good if you put a good spin on it.

  • Jaded

You should have to get a license to have a child. You have to get one to get married, you have to get one to drive (and prove financial responsibility) you have to get one to go hunting, hell, you’re supposed to have a license to have a dog.

We need to stop unwanted pregnancies, and stop irresponsible people from breeding, leaving their problems for the rest of society to deal with.

    • les

i have a solution. buy a tv and stand up !!!!!!! understand

  • Salty1

Women will still have the option to murder their unborn babies, the pro-abortion crowd such as Planned Parenthood only use the extreme cases when trying to make their own profit motivated points. The difference will be that taxpayers will not and should not be paying for peoples idea of birth control.

  • Rick McDaniel

The idiocy is further highlighted, by the fact government can no longer pay to operate schools for all those children, whose families, pay no taxes to finance the schools.

The entire anti-abortion movement, is nothing but stupid, because the world is totally overpopulated with humans, most of whom, do not pay their way in the world, thus bankrupting governments.

  • Dan

A woman’s first right to choose is her decision to take the risk of having sex without it resulting in a pregnancy. Her choice also includes having sex with someone who is not committed to her or the child she may bear. I didn’t participate in either of those choices, and neither did the government. As a taxpaying citizen, who also believes that every human life is unique and special, I do not feel that I should have to pay for her next choice to kill the child. At what point does a woman simply accept full responsibility for her all of her own choices? This isn’t about women. This is about personal responsibility.

  • rob

This will end up in supreme court. The President can veto, which he should. The Senate will not allow this to pass. Race is the true reason why there are antiabortion people out there. Not religion. They use religion as a cover but truly its about preserving the white race. If whites are aborted, that means the supremacy will die. That surely cannot happen for the white supremacists, who are also elected members of the House and Senate. Whites have to be born in order to dominate the world and make slaves out of non white peoples. Blacks are also against abortion mainly because they feel they won’t get more welfare and support also because of the religion in their case.
Mexicans and Hispanics don’t get many abortions because of the Catholic dogma on abortion and contraception. They aren’t as likely to be on the welfare programs due to finding out their immigrant status which could lead to deportation. You cannot possibly get away with lying to welfare people with your social security number, it matches up with INS records on their computer.

Another thing is we need less unwanted children to be born. Rapes, incest, etc are all too common and why should anyone have to suffer through having an unwanted baby?

    • R Brown

The services provided there are not the services that Plan Parenthood was initially supposed to provide when it was conceived. It was for Planning Parenthood. How many children can I afford at this time? I do I prevent having more than I can afford, etc.

      • schrodinger

The least expensive and most reliable form of birth control, and the most effective means of preventing teen pregnancy…

No side effects, totally reversible, doesn’t offend anyone’s religious sensibilities or morals, and it’s free. No government funding necessary.

    • Aurora B.

Rob, SOMEONE wants these children, namely many of the couples who have tried in vain to conceive their own, and who really want to be parents. You have no idea how long many of these couples have to wait for a child to adopt. To say that these children are “unwanted” is simply not true. Perhaps a pregnancy is “unplanned”, or perhaps even “inconvenient” for the woman who is pregnant. But there is certainly someone out there who would happily and lovingly adopt these babies if only they could be born. I know I would, if only I had the means to do so.

  • Kiki

I’m sure all of you that are able to throw out stats is because you have worked in a clinic or volunteer at PP right? For those of you that have not ever set foot in a PP clinic you really don’t know what services are offered there. Robert PP is NOT 99% abortion clinic 1% health clinic. What this organization does is bring awareness to such a demanding topic. Obviously, something is not working either parents are not talking to their kids about protection or absence is not being practiced. Let’s get real!!

PP does a fantastic job of providing people (not jut women) with affordable healthcare and education.

So… in other words Planned Parenthood is ONCE AGAIN placing the killing of babies above the health of women. Why doesn’t Planned Parenthood simply stop abortion???Then they could have the funding ? Why should those of us who KNOW factually abortion is murder be forced to pay for it? What about our choices?
