FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Most people have heard about or been on an internet dating website, but do you know if the company does a background check on its members? You might if a House bill passes.

Arlington Republican Representative Diane Patrick says it’s a short list of internet dating websites that do criminal background checks. “Out of 1,500 online dating sites only one major site requires background checks,” she said.

The bill Patrick is proposing, SB 488 and HB 1052, would require that websites post whether or not they do background checks, but she said, “This legislation does not require an internet dating site to perform background searches.”

Patrick is hoping that the free market will take over, pushing more business to the websites that offer background checks, thus encouraging other sites to perform the checks to stay competitive.
