DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Both Michael and Megan Brooks are a true picture of love. Their four year wedding anniversary is April 21 and Megan is giving her husband a gift he desperately needs and will always treasure — she’s going under the knife to give him one of her kidneys.
“He’s a good husband a good father if I could do this to give him a better quality of life then that’s what I’m here for,” explained Megan.
Michael was diagnosed with diabetes his senior year of high school. Then, two years ago his health declined dramatically. Doctors discovered Michael was suffering from kidney failure and started him on dialysis.
“We did the testing for my family and her [Megan] and she ended up being my match,” Michael said of his wife. “A match made in heaven.”
It’s a match that gives new meaning to the words soul mates. Michael’s mother, Thelma Brooks, explained it this way, “It’s God’s doing. It’s all in the plan from the beginning.”
Michael was on a 5-year waiting list until Megan was found to be a perfect match. Although she’s not hesitating to give the gift of life to her husband, transplant surgery is very serious.
North Texas doctors say that risk is minimal for the couple. “We hope the kidney will work right away and that the couple will be able to go on with their lives without dialysis,” said Dr. Alejandro Mejia with Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
While the couple has three children now they share another incredible bond. “I’m a lucky guy to have her and I want everybody to know that. She’s the love of my life,” Michael said of his wife lovingly.
