AUSTIN (AP) – The manager of the Texas electrical grid has declared an emergency and asked Texans to cut their energy consumption.
The Energy Reliability Council of Texas asked consumers and businesses to reduce their energy use from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday after declaring a Level 1 Energy Emergency Alert. That allows ERCOT to tap into uncommitted generation capacity and power feeds from neighboring electrical grids.
An ERCOT statement issued late Monday afternoon said no further upgrade in emergency procedures, such as rolling blackouts, were expected unless demand were to grow.
ERCOT Vice President Kent Saathoff said unseasonably hot weather and the loss of several generation units early Monday prompted the emergency.
