Search For Man After Motor Boat Hits Eagle Mountain Lake Kayakers

AZLE (AP) – A nighttime collision involving a motor boat and three kayaks on a North Texas lake has left one person missing and another hurt.

Rescue crews Tuesday resumed the search for the kayaker missing on Eagle Mountain Lake. Azle Fire Department Capt. Travis Reed says the accident happened Monday night in a poorly lit part of the lake.

Tuesday rescuers are using side-scan sonar and dive teams in the search for the missing man.

“We’re just looking for a missing person at this point. There were some subjects out in some kayaks, watching some fireworks, and another motorboat come across and hit one of ‘em,” explained Captain Neal Bieler with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Bieler says a man in another kayak suffered a leg injury. He’s being treated for a broken leg.

The driver of the boat stopped to help after the Fourth of July evening accident.

Well, here we go again. A family of idiots traversing a dark lake with no running lights or anchor lights. Combined, a fast running bass boat with no or sadly lacking spot lights. Anyone who has been on water at night knows how water swallows up the most powerful of floodlights. To run anywhere near safely at night requires a light bar similar to an off road vehicle with several floods and spots on it. A single hand hels spot just doesn’t get it. I’m certainly sorry for the family’s loss, but water and stupidity (by all concerned) is a recipe for disaster and heart ache.

I agree with Pablo, any kayakers on a Lake 4th of July is complete ignorance and neglect of their own safety. They should have known better and I commend the boat driver for stopping and helping – they better not try to do anything to boat driver – any legal action would be totally WRONG and unethical. I can’t imagine kayakers ! out there 4th of July… geez.. an accident waiting to happen, poor judgement.

4th of July on Eagle Mountain is a zoo. Lots of people who rarely take their boats out, let alone after dark, clustered in one place, typically with alcohol involved. The kayakers were pretty dumb to take a basically invisible boat out on the lake at night, and $1 says they probably didn’t have have lights.
