Sandie’s Arts Blog: Lions, Tigers, Art & Stage!
It’s always a good time when the circus is in town! The world famous Ringling Bros.-Barnum & Bailey pulls into the American Airlines Center Wednesday night and continues through August 7. The circus then moves to the Fort Worth Convention Center and will be there August 10-14. Bring the whole family for time tested good old-fashioned fun as clowns, amazing animal acts and death defying aerial and trapeze artists take to the three rings. It’s the perfect way to come in from the heat for a few hours and just escape!
Fort Worth’s popular Casa Mañana Children’s Theater has been busy this summer! Their second annual Apprentice Program summer musical production, The Secret Garden, will be performed on stage July 29 – 31. It’s an audition-based program comprised of Dallas/Fort Worth students ages 13 – 20 with exceptional theatrical talent and was such a hit last year – they brought it back! It’s a great showcase for our many talented young performers in North Texas.
While in Fort Worth stop by the Kimbell Art Museum for their “Art Spark” – a free family art festival. Enjoy an exciting afternoon of free art-making activities, children’s films, and performances for participants of all ages on Saturday, July 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission to Picasso and Braque: The Cubist Experiment, 1910–1912 is also free during the festival.
Two Tony Award-winning musicals are in North Texas this week! “9 to 5” comes to Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth: the musical tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do — even in a man’s world. It continues through July 31. And for the second week, “Guys and Dolls” continues as part of our Dallas Summer Musicals through the 31st at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Both great shows for the summer season!
And lastly – another circus of sorts is in town as well! Cirque du Soleil brings their critically acclaimed touring production Dralion to Frisco’s Dr Pepper Arena this week. It continues through the 31st and is suitable for all ages, with it’s fusion of ancient Chinese traditions and acrobatics along with the avant-garde style Cirque has made so famous.
Have a great and cool weekend! See you here next week…center stage!
