NACOGDOCHES (CBSDFW.COM) – The drought currently impacting much of the state is helping in the recovery of debris from the 2003 space shuttle Columbia disaster.

Low lake levels have led to the emergence of what looks like a tank, about four foot in diameter, from the doomed shuttle.

Columbia came apart during re-entry over East Texas on February 1, 2003, killing all seven astronauts on board.  The debris field spread from the eastern part of North Texas to a large area around Nacogdoches.

The tank was discovered in a part of Lake Nacogdoches which is normally 18 feet under water. The drought has drained that part of the lake and the object is now exposed.

Nacogdoches police have sent photos to NASA to see if the debris is indeed part of Columbia.   Police are warning that if the object is part of the shuttle, it’s government property and anyone tampering with it would be subject to prosecution.

Well, gee whiz…pick the dang thing up. Now’s the time to clean the lake! Put the prisoners to work, picking up trash along ALL the shorelines. Don’t we all want clean water?

    1. C Bauer says:

AMEN! No “three hots and a cot” today, gents! It’s picking up trash at the lake in 105-degree temps!

I’m sure it is low today (haven’t been by for a while), but Lake Lavon when it is dry exposes thousands of tree stumps. We need to get the Army Corps of Engineers out there to pull those stumps! I know Lavon is not a “recreational” lake, but boaters do enjoy it, and it is very dangerous to have such an excessive amount of tree debris that can tip over or catch unsuspecting boats. And to fall and be impaled on a stump, knocked out and drown?
Yes! Indeed, lets clean up our lakes during this drought!

    Army Corps of Engineers?

    Yes, yes and YES.

    1. Texas Waters says:

Really…….. Lavon is almost 7 ft low right now. Before any main lake stumps come into play, it is going to have to drop another 5 ft or so. By that time none of the boat ramps will be usable. But with Lavon not being the only low lake, would you expect the Corps to go uproot all stumps in the rest of the lakes? Go to Lake Fork if you are worried about a few stumps.

      1. YRofTexas says:

Thank you for your kind words of wisdom, oh noble one! “Texas Waters”. I’m heading out RIGHT NOW to Lake Fork to please you….

In the meantime, the stumps in Lavon still need to be pulled; people (whom you do not know, nor care about) continue to risk injury. We are pleased that you have all of these wonderful words of wisdom to convey to the rest of us! Let us all take a deep breath and soak in Texas Waters’ factual statement – er – opinion…

    2. glaw says:

stumps are structure, for bait fish… food for bigger fish.. good luck.

      1. YRofTexas says:

@ glaw – exactly! I’m talking about leaving some sections/areas for stumps…they need to be left for the breeding and areas to fish. During the severe drought of Lavon in 2004-2006?, the stumps were nearly everywhere. I recall cows grazing along the floor of the lake. It was amazing to see.
But I also saw people skiing, and, unless the boaters were very familiar with the area, it was a risky venture to do any swimming, boating or skiing.
I’m not entirely right nor entirely wrong.

The most important thing that could be done for Texas and the country, is to get rid of the current occupant of the White House in the next election, along with his liberal cohorts.

Great quote, but it’s from Ayn Rand in “Atlas Shrugged”. Everyone should read it, or at least see the recent movie, for a clear explanation of where our country is headed.

@JimCT – You DO realize there have been more than one shuttle disaster, correct? And why would a shuttle taking off from Kennedy Space Center have left debris in Texas? For someone begging for facts to be straightened out, you do a poor job yourself.

  12. jrr says:

pretty sure it was during re-entry.
