DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM)- It’s almost time for the State Fair of Texas and Tuesday Big Tex got some new clothes.

City workers dressed the 52-foot cowboy with tender loving care. Dressing Big Tex in his new shirt and jeans is a bit daunting since he has a 31-foot chest and a 15-foot inseam!

The jeans for Big Tex weigh 80 pounds alone, and if you combine that with his new shirt he’ll wear about 200 pounds of clothes.

KRLD’s Phyllis Smith Reports:

State Fair of Texas spokeswoman Susan Gooding says some 22,000 people voted online in April for their shirt design for Big Tex. The outfit comes courtesy of Dickies… the official sponsor of the state fair icon.

The designers at Dickies say they got the inspiration for the new design from the Texas flag and a western-style shirt.

Dickies designer Yu Tang said part of the design brainstorming even included a trip to Fort Worth. “We went to the Stockyards to see what a traditional western shirt looks like,” she said.

The new shirt for Big Tex is red, white and blue, features stars on the front and back, and has a star on the back yoke.

For city worker Marvin Wilder, who helped zip and button the big shirt and jeans, today was a special day. “Slide it on in where you can pin it,” he instructed his co-workers. Wilder says he always wanted to work on Big Tex.

The State Fair of Texas runs from September 30th until October 23rd.

22,000 people voting online about clothes for a giant f-cking statue. How many people in Texas do you think took the time to call their representatives about the debt ceiling?

  2. Dandy D says:

It’s a lot easier to press a button or click on a choice online that call your representative and wait on hold forever. And you have a real voice in determining the clothes, but you have no say so in what your rep votes because it just doesn’t matter what we say or want.

This is true. Sad, but true.
