TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A $2,000,000 project may help a Trinity Railway Express (TRE) station with the problems of it’s own success.

Memories of the overloaded platform the day of the Dallas Mavericks championship game were on the minds of those breaking ground on an expansion project for the Richland Hills TRE station. But Tarrant County Commissioner Gary Fickes knows firsthand the station is always busy.

“I got there at 8:00 o’clock and the parking lot was totally packed. It’s that way everyday – Monday through Friday,” he said.

The project will expand the parking by some 100 spaces and realign the adjoining street outside the parking perimeter.

Fickes said the expansion could also lead to other development. “What they’re hoping to do is entice some type of retail that would be able to serve that customer-base that show up there every morning. That’s a real busy place,” he said.

Retail businesses could include a coffee and sandwich shop.

Most of the money for the project will come from Federal Transit Administrative grants.
