Texas Prisons Stop Special Last Meals For Killers

HOUSTON (AP) – Texas prison officials say they’re stopping special last meals for condemned inmates facing execution after an elaborate request from a convicted killer in a notorious dragging death prompted complaints from a prominent state senator.

Sen. John Whitmire told prisons director Brad Livingston Thursday he wanted the “ridiculous” and “inappropriate” practice ended or he’d seek a state statute banning the “last meal of choice.”

Livingston agreed and said the practice was ending immediately.

Whitmire’s ire was raised by the final meal request from Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was executed Wednesday night for his role in death of James Byrd Jr. Among other items, Brewer requested two chicken fried steaks, a triple cheeseburger, a pound of barbecue and a pint of ice cream.

Prison officials said he didn’t eat any of it.

I am pro death penalty. This is the proper punishment determined by the Judicial System for crimes of this magnitude. But I do believe it to be the last act of a civilized society to provide the condemned with what ever he wishes for his final meal regardless whether he eats it or not. I will even go so far as to say that if the condemned asks for liquor, beer, or wine it should be provided. No matter how heinous the crime they committed was, I think we could at least do that much.

    • BDK

Ok, I can go for that. The next time a death row inmate requests their last meal you can be there to pay for it and run and get it for him.

What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

      • MG

shut up Bower you sound just as stupid hateful jerk !!!!!

  • C Bauer

G-dd-mn it! There goes my idea for Lobster Thermidor and Beluga Caviar served on Brooke Burke’s perfectly-shaped rear end. This is assuming I ever do something stupid and go to death row, of course.

    • MG

another stupid comment from you Bauer

      • C Bauer

Hey, I have an idea! How about you go fnck yourself (since nobody else will)?!

  • dfwman

I think the fact that we don’t just beat a POS like Russell Brewer to death right after the word “guilty” is uttered by the jury foreman proves that we are a civilized society. Make them eat beans and rice just like all the other prisoners. I doubt any of these guys on death row provided “last request” items for the people that they killed.

    • MG

Yes I agree give him the same now watch what you say about beans/rice you might offend the cross overs from down south this dish is served quite often @ On The Border lol (Shut up Bower )

      • C Bauer

        NiteNurse, is that you? ;-)

  • darrell

well (damn). being on disability and trying to survive during this disaster called obamanomics, there went my last chance to have a very good steak dinner with potatoe and salad before i die.

Why would a convict that was about to be executed be awarded a ‘special’ meal…? A decent meal yes, a special one, no. For that matter, why should they be given a sedative or any other medication to reduce their anxiety or pain while being prepared for the death sentence to be administered.

Just shut up and ‘DO IT’.

Being civilized is accomplished by not reaping upon them exactly what they reaped on their victum. Not by providing them a special meal which none of their victums probably had. In no way should evil people who kill others for no valid reason be rewarded in any shape or manor.
Last I knew even hospitals did not provide a special meal to those they knew where going to die and that would have even been paid for, they wouldn’t even let you bring in such a special meal.

  • noname

Civilized societies do NOT kill people. Period. I can’t believe after YESTERDAY when an innocent man was just executed that people can go around and promote something like this.

  • bobb

well since my tax dollars are paying for a lot of there meals anyway they can have what everyone else is having!

  • Johhan E. Windsailor

Good, they should be fed the same last meal as their victims and should be killed in the same fasion.

  • NiteNurse

At the hospital we usually have the patient eat nothing at least 6-8 hours before they get put to sleep. Being put to death should be no different.

I will not dispute that some innocent people have been put to death, yet in todays world with DNA evidence and more evidence needed I think the chance of a mistake is far less than it ever has been in the past. As for the person recently executed in Georgia that claimed innocent all the way to his last breath, well given his record I highly doubt his words along with all the people that saw it happen. A lot of the vics find God in prison no matter if they are on death row or not, but unfortunately with most it is only a ploy used to get out.
God’s own chosen people have killed in so-called holy wars all the way up to today in which they take far more than an eye for an eye which is a mandentory law of God for the Jews to obey. God condones killing (stoning women to death is in his Jewish laws), etc. so your calling God not civilized? Your calling our military and police not civilized? Guess I’m not civilized, since that makes you a target for low lifes that you think have the right to kill/harm you or children with no resistence.
As for death row I think it should require DNA evidence or physical evidence unless there is no chance of mistaken ID via the person knew them and ID’d them with other evidence that supports it (yes lot of liars these days no matter what the credentials are).
