AUSTIN (AP)  The Texas Longhorns find themselves facing a crisis of confidence.

Their best player, tailback Fozzy Whittaker, is lost for the season. And there are other injuries on offense.
Freshman quarterback David Ash struggled badly in his first road start during Saturday’s 17-5 loss at Missouri. The Longhorns (6-3) face No. 16 Kansas State (8-2) this Saturday.

Even Texas coach Mack Brown says he’s got a mess with very little time to sort things out.

Injuries to Whittaker, Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron left Texas using fourth-team tailback Jeremy Hills against Missouri.

Malcolm Brown and Bergeron may return this week, but Whittaker is a huge loss. Mack Brown called him the heart of the Texas offense as a player and leader.
