DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A female employee at the Dawson State Jail in downtown Dallas was shot in the parking lot after getting into her minivan just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Dallas police detective Sgt. Eddie H. Douglas says the victim was already in her parked van at 106 West Commerce Street when a man approached the driver’s side and opened fire. Jail spokesman Steve Owen identified the woman as Shiva Daniel; a mother and maintenance employee at the facility. Owen says Daniel’s coworkers found her shot inside the van.

Daniel was shot in the upper body and was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Sgt. Douglas said.

The shooter is believed to be a friend of Daniel’s. Police have not issued a description of the suspect or his vehicle and said the shooting may be the result of a domestic dispute.
