BURLESON (CBSDFW.COM) – Law enforcement officials have found an elderly Johnson County man who had been reported missing.

A Silver Alert was issued for Freddy Johnson. He had last been seen around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the 400 block of Rand Street in Burleson. His family was particularly concerned since the 73-year-old is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The man’s pickup truck — a red 2002 Ford F-250 — reportedly broke down in Comanche County. A deputy stopped to assist him and realized that he was the person from the Silver Alert. Johnson is in good condition.

Please tell me why he is still driving? I had to have the Dr tell my dad when he needed to stop driving and then followed up with taking the keys. It was not easy for me but I think I made the right decision. My dad had dementia and lots of health problems.

Maybe he got the keys and just took off before his family knew what was happening or could stop him. It doesn’t mean he was being allowed to drive.

If you have a family member that is showing signs of advanced dementia where driving is a concern then you need to first make sure that the person does not have access to a vehicle. The second thing is to ask a physician or social worker what legal things need to happen so that you can keep that person safe. People with dementia can have moments of being lucid but upon evaluation they aren’t really all there.
