Komen Reverses Course, Will Keep Funding Planned Parenthood

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – In an abrupt about-face, Susan G. Komen for The Cure says it will continue to fund Planned Parenthood.

Earlier this week Komen came under fire for cutting its grants to Planned Parenthood.  It routinely gave several hundred thousand dollars each year to Planned Parenthood.

Komen released a statement Friday morning.  In it, they said,

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

The statement also read,

We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

Komen, based in Dallas and founded by local philanthropist Nancy Brinker, has become the leading organization that fights breast cancer.

Excerpt from CBS News Dallas Article: Komen, based in Dallas and founded by local philanthropist Nancy Brinker, has become the leading organization that fights breast cancer.—-Yeah Right! All they are is a marketing and PR organization raking in thousands of dollars and do no do enough to educate women about real cancer risks!

  • WeArentAllLikeYou

Well, that took longer than it should have. Too bad SGK, the damage is done, no matter how much back-peddling you do. And once again the Reich-wing gets SMACKED DOWN. Caving to narrow-minded conservative pressure is going the way of the Whigs. ITS ABOUT TIME.

  • YRofTexas

Wussy Poo Komen! Can’t stand the heat!
Forget any backing from me, since I am proudly pro-life and not pro-death of infants.
I don’t believe in infanticide, and agencies that sponsor death do not get my dollar.

What a joke – Komen Foundation!
    Weak knees; weak character!

  • momwalks

So if Komen funds abortion by saying it is funding (non-existent) mammograms at PP, it should become part of the pending misappropriating funds investigation. This is so sad, because Komen has done so much good for breast cancer research funding.

  • momwalks

‎26 Democrat Senators wrote letters to Komen…pressure, threat? Oh ,yes. My question is what business is it of the government’s political arm of the democrat party how a PRIVATE organization uses its money? This seems very much an abuse of power.

    • Chris Young

SGK is in a very bad position at this time. Now that people are really looking into how they are spending donations and more importantly how much they keep for themselves. I know I did quite a bit of research on my own and keep coming back to the statistic that only 20-25% of every dollar goes to research or PP, etc. Thats pathetic that they simply keep 75% of the money for salaries, buildings, self promotion. Its infuriating when you compare it to the Salvation Army that 95% of every dollar goes to the actual charity they only have a 5% administrative cost. I think its best if SGK just goes away. People will find a way to donate without SGK simply keeping 80% of the donations.

    • YRofTexas

Agreed. You make a good point!

  • Kim

I think the Constitution says that you are innocent until proven guilty.(I don’t think Obama or Nancy Pelosi has managed to get that changed that yet.) How many other agencies are being investigated by the federal government? Probably thousands that we know nothing about and some would surprise you. I appreciated the free mamograms that I received from Planned Parenthood and the check ups because I didn’t have insurance. They were always nice and helpful.

  • momwalks

Clarity helps. Read the Komen statement in full & not the left/right spin.

If Planned Parenthood is found guilty of criminal investigations, several of which are ongoing around the states (Medicaid fraud in Texas and California; fraudulent reporting and illegal abortions in Kansas, and yes, the federal Congressional investigation, etc.), Komen’s criteria will still disqualify Planned Parenthood from receiving grants, as it should.

    • Chris Young

Komens donations go to mammograms not for abortions. With a group as large as PP is your going to have some fringe nutcase people. For that matter a group as large as SGK there are a LOT of questions as to how they are handling their funds and the fact they are so inefficient and seem to pay the higher ups ridiculous salaries of 500K. I question the need to even have a VP or a President for that matter. Seems like a lot of waste imo. Its funny how the Salvation Army gets by nicely on literally 15 times less administrative fees. SA is 5% SGK is 80% Pretty disgusting Mrs. Komen would be ashamed.

  • momwalks

The investigation of PP is due to it being a taxpayer funded entity. It is the responsibility of government to appropriate community funds in a legal manner and purpose and to oversee correct disbursement absent political maneuvering.

Komen is a privately funded entity. Its choices should never be dictated by threats from any one party of the government. Government has no overseer responsibility in a privately owned entity.

  • its me

SGK knows which side its bread is buttered on. Their little foray into appeasing the right wing fanatics is going to be a very expensive one.

  • momwalks

SGK functions as a responsible organization and will appropriate any of its private funding as it chooses towards legally intact organizations in line with its own prescribed criteria.

    • Chris Young

Their responsibility and for that matter credibility has come into question now more than ever. The fact is they are not responsible with the donations. If they were they would not have such a flat out insulting administrative cost per dollar of as high as 80%. Why do people even need SGK to decide where donations go? Theres no way it should take the lions share of every dollar simply to run SGK and poorly I might add. The best thing for SGK is to simply go away you have done enough damage thank you.

  • Mailman Dan

I wonder if SGK will refund the money sent in the last 3 days?

Planned Parenthood does help some people, but the ones it doesn’t help it they silence with a scalpel to the base of the skull…

I wonder if anyone at SGK ever wonders if one of the millions who died at the hands of PP, would have grown up to invent the cure for cancer?

    • Chris Young

That is not how abortions occur. I know it makes for a great post to be so dramatic but dont insult the readers please. The downside of actually having a baby that the parents are unable to take care of far outweigh the upside. Besides the last time I checked abortion is legal in this country. The morality of the issue should be personal. Its non of your business if people want abortions. You dont want one great, but who are you to tell someone else how to live their lives. Its insulting.

      • nonya

If they can’t take care of a child, why have one? Why take the risk? If you make a mistake, own up to it. Adoption is always an option and a better one than abortion. Abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method to prevent pregnancy. If you don’t practice that, use multiple layers of protection.

  • Nonya

Great, now the SGK donation can offset the costs of the abortions they do so they can claim that no tax payer funded abortions happen. Not going to be donating to that organization. There are others that are not associated that do find cancer research.

I could care less if they reverse their decision or not, I, for one, WILL NOT contribute anything more to SGK foundation. Instead, Planned Parenthood gets 100% of my donations.

    • Chris Young

Good for you. I am so happy to see the extent of SGKs exposure. They were exposed for the fraud that they are. Their administrative costs are so out of whack as to be negilgent. It will be a great day when SGK is no longer a leading charity. I believe the women who run this charity crave the lime light and spend way too much on self promotion and their own salaries. SGK could be run just fine with people that simply donate their time. There is absolutely no need to have a presidents and VPs with absurdly high salaries.

  • Chris Young

“More than 100 small charities have received legal opposition from Komen regarding various uses of the words “for the cure” in their names, at a cost of nearly $1 million per year in donor funds.[76] Among the offending charitable organizations and events were “Par for the Cure,” “Surfing for a Cure,” “Cupcakes for a Cure” ”
Seems like SBK will sue you if you actually use the word cure in your charities title. SBK is not a good charity IMO. Its wonderful to see their bad deeds have caught up with them and are snowballing. I think SBK can count on their donations will drop this year as they should. People are waking up and realizing they dont need a poorly run business acting only as a middle man to donate.
By the way The Komen CEO salary in 2010 was $459,406 a year. Shame on you Mrs. Moddelmog.
Hold on I found this info just now. According to Charity Navigator, Hala G. Moddelmog, the CEO of Susan G Komen, makes $531,924 plus bonus. Currently Susans sister is now listed as CEO with no information as to her salary.

  • Chris Young

I found the most recent information on what the CEO makes and its disturbing.
SGK IRS form 990, which is listed on the website, lists Nancy Brinker’s compensation as $417,171. This is the 2010-2011 990, the newest one available.
SGK only gave PP $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before.
I wish I could get into the “non profit” business. For a non profit it seems like there is an awsome profit for Mrs CEO Brinker who is Susan Komens sister. I wonder how happy Susan would be with her sister for such a large salary. Again shame on you Nancy! Her salary is equalivent to over 5000 entry fees for runners in race for the cure. Thats disgusting at best.

OK…IF Komen is a charity for Breast Cancer…I can deal with that…BUT…as the article in Shine states: “35 percent of the services they provided in 2009 were for sexually transmitted disease screening and treatment, 35 percent were for contraception, 16 percent were for cancer screening and prevention, and just 3 percent were for abortion services. ”

Contraception has NOTHING to do with Breast Cancer….Breast Cancer has no correlation to being classified by the CDC as a Sexually Transmitted disease….and when was Breast Cancer linked to having a viable child growing within your body linked to Breast Cancer???
I am pro-life..however I too think after Rape and Incest there should be choices…
But I was never told within the ads and crusades my money was going anywhere else the Breast Cancer Research which brings me to the next one…

WHY then is only 16 percent of our contributions going to the reason we are donating…they NEVER said we were donating money to NON-Breast Cancer remedies!!! and BTW…my mom had cancer so I feel close here…

I HAVE BEEN BILKED….and will NEVER DONATE or buy into any other program (ie…the pink lids on yogurt… they have EVER AGAIN!!!

  • Concerned

We need a IN_DEPTH Investigation here…People are asked to donate to SGK for Cancer Reasearch and searching for a cure….
I am calling on ALL of Congress to find out why they advertise one thing and spend money on another!!!

Even in private charities …you can’t go on radio and TV and lie or hide where the money goes!!!
