DALLAS (AP) – The forecast is calling for blankets of bluebonnets.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center says that despite a historic drought in Texas, well-timed rains in the fall and winter should make for an impressive wildflower season in northern, central and eastern parts of the state.

The center says bountiful amounts of colorful blooms are expected in those areas, but it’s not good news everywhere in Texas. Observers say the showing likely won’t be as good in the Panhandle, West Texas and South Texas because those areas didn’t get beneficial rains in the fall when the wildflowers germinate.

Damon Waitt, senior director and botanist at the Lady Bird center, says wildflower season in Texas reaches its peak around mid-April.
