DISD Teacher Continues To Call For Leap Day Sickout

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A Dallas schoolteacher is calling for a sickout to protest the recent decision by the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) to lengthen the school day for teachers by 45 minutes.

The teacher, who calls himself “Mr. Jones” in order to stay anonymous, is calling for a leap day sickout for all teachers.

While some critics say during the current budget crisis teachers need to do their share to help out, the teacher said educators have done enough.

KRLD’s Phyllis Smith Reports:

“We sacrificed two of our personal days off. We’ve had wage freezes twice now [and] we’ve had our insurance premiums increased,” he said.

When asked if he thought a sick out was bad for the children the teacher responded, “We do teach our students to stand up for what they believe is right, So, I don’t think that sends a bad message at all.”

The teacher said he chose February 29 – Leap Day – for the sickout to show that the DISD is taking a big leap backwards in their treatment of educators.

Mr. Jones’ effort to gain respect for teachers is admirable; however he will most likely be fired before the end of his first hour on March 1.

If this happens…the kids are the ones to suffer!!! DISD (*MR JONES) shame on you…the world has sacaficed…you need to thank God for a JOB while millions of others go without. You have enough issues in the system but this is causing yet another distraction…GO TO WORK
