DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It was Tuesday evening, a visit to the Owner’s Box Sports Bar and Grill inside the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas uncovered a nagging nuisance for customers and guests.

“We’re sorry. We’ve had them for a long time”, one bar staffer apologized.  Floating in one diner’s beverage, five gnats. And during the entire visit, the customer and his guests constantly swatted away the pesky fruit flies swarming over their table.  “It’s been like this for a while”, another waitstaff said.

By Wednesday, CBS 11 started calling Omni Hotel officials. Was the hotel inundated with a gnat infestation?
Where were so many insects coming from?

A hotel spokesperson pointed toward changing weather conditions, coupled with an open patio for the sports bar, as the reasons for the gnat presence in the hotel.

“We are working with a pest management company, using organic materials,” Caryn Kboudi with the Omni said Wednesday.

Kboudi said there’s no indication the sports bar or any other section of the hotel has a refuse or sanitation problem.

Gnats tend to congregate around standing water, spoiled fruit or produce. The insects reproduce rapidly.

The Omni is a Dallas city-owned hotel. The city’s public health department provides restaurant inspections.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, a cursory view of the sports bar showed evidence of gnats still present, but the quantity of the irritable pests had dropped considerably.
