DALLAS (1080 KRLD) – The White Rock Marathon has owned its name for more than 40 years, but the annual December race will now be called the Dallas Marathon, city officials announced Wednesday.

The change, announced during a press conference at Dallas City Hall, is the latest in a series of changes made to the marathon over the past few months.

In March, it was announced that the starting and finish lines will no longer be in Fair Park. The Dallas Marathon will now begin and end in downtown Dallas near the Omni Hotel.

Pre and post race events will be held at the Dallas Convention Center.

Race director Marcus Grunewald says that the rerouting and renaming are part of a plan to draw more people to the race from across the nation –– and the globe.

“It certainly ends some confusion,” said Grunewald. “If someone in France hears about the Dallas White Rock Marathon, then they really aren’t sure what the White Rock part means.”

He says simply calling it the ‘Dallas Marathon’ will help market the race as organizers look to continue to improve on its already large draw.

Last year, around 25,000 runners and 300,000 spectators participated.

Metro PCS will continue as the marathon’s main sponsor.

The race will be held on December 9 this year. Signup begins June 1.
