Police Officer Killed By Suspected Drunk Driver
Updated 4:42 p.m: Venus Police Chief R.L. Young has confirmed Officer Dustin Dodson was heading home after finishing his shift at the Lancaster Police Department. Dodson was westbound on his motorcycle when Ricardo Espinoza pulled out in front of him at the intersection of Highway 67 & Farm to Market 2738. Espinoza left the scene but another driver drove by and called police to report the crash. Espinoza was pulled over not far from the site and taken into custody without incident. He is expected to go before a magistrate Monday.
LANCASTER (CBSDFW.COM & AP) - A police officer died Saturday night after colliding with a suspected drunk driver earlier in the day.
Lancaster City Manager Opal Mauldin Robertson says 25-year-old Officer Dustin Dodson died around 11:15 p.m. Dodson had been involved in an accident on Highway 67 in Johnson County around 6:50 a.m and had been taken to the hospital afterwards.
Venus Police officer James Robinson told The Associated Press that 22-year-old Ricardo Espinoza of Alvarado was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and an accident causing serious injury, which would likely be upgraded following Dodson’s death. Robinson says a witness led police to Espinoza. He was being held Sunday pending formal charges. His mugshot has not been released yet.
