My favorite baseball player during my peak of baseball (entire game) love was and still is Vlad Guerrero. He could throw, he didn’t wear batting gloves, he didn’t care how filthy his jersey was, and he could straight up hit anything that the pitcher threw.
Then he started playing for the Angels, I thought, “it’s okay, as long as he beats everybody else and not the Rangers I can still love his game.”
Then for years six years, he absolutely destroyed the Rangers. It wasn’t until he was in the waning years of his career that I could actually enjoy watching him again, with a Texas T on his hat. Even then it felt a little treacherous.
Now, the Angels have another player who is absolutely a blast to watch in Mike Trout.
Problem is, I can’t stand this guy anymore.
The hype machine swirling around how good he is, the fact that Josh Hamilton did nothing to slap him down and put him in his place in the last series, and watching him burn the bases the way he did on ESPN’s Sunday night Prime Time game, simply irritated me.
Every time I looked up, there was Mike Trout, at the plate, on third base, in the dugout. And there he was doing damage to the Rangers in some way.
I’m sure there is a flaw in this guy somewhere, even Hamilton’s five tools comes with the off-field addendum.
But after his 5-for-10, 4 runs scored, 1 triple, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base, 5 point batting average climb series performance over the weekend, this guy now gets on my nerves.
We all try to love players for what they can accomplish on the field, and give them their credit, but somewhere along the line, no matter what a guy does, when he does it against your team, it just bites you.
Mike Trout, you’re now on my list.
