FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (Sports Network) - World No. 1 Swiss great Roger Federer has been installed as the top seed for the 2012 U.S. Open, which will commence Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Federer is the reigning Wimbledon champion and a five-time U.S. Open titlist.

The 17-time Grand Slam champ will be followed by No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic, the defending U.S. Open champ; No. 3 Andy Murray of Great Britain, the Olympic gold medalist and 2008 U.S. Open runner-up; and No. 4 seed David Ferrer of Spain.

World No. 3 Rafael Nadal will miss the newest edition of the Open due to knee problems. The Spanish star was last year’s runner-up to the Serbian Djokovic and captured America’s Open in 2010.

The 31-year-old Federer has won six titles this year, including three ATP World Tour Masters events, along with his seventh Wimbledon title. He broke Pete Sampras’ record for most weeks at No. 1 this season, surpassing the American great’s record of 286 total weeks.

Federer won the U.S. Open title from 2004-2008 and is tied with Sampras and Jimmy Connors with five U.S. Open titles — the most in the Open Era.

The top-10 seeds will be rounded out by former Aussie Open runner-up Jo- Wilfried Tsonga of France; former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic; 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina; Serbian Janko Tipsarevic; 6-foot-9 American John Isner; and Argentina’s Juan Monaco.

Isner is the highest-seeded American at No. 9, while 2003 U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick is seeded 20th, Mardy Fish is seeded 23rd, and Sam Querrey is seeded at No. 27.

The 128-player men’s draw will be revealed on Thursday.
