DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A man is in police custody after narrowly missing a Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic.
Dallas Police have identified the man as 27-year-old Ernesto Rodriguez. Rodriguez is suspected of driving while intoxicated, and faces charges of aggravated assault on a public servant, aggravated assault with a vehicle and evading arrest.
Authorities said that Rodriguez was found passed out in his car on Saturday night in Pleasant Grove. As paramedics tried to check on him, he suddenly woke up and threw a beer bottle over a fence. Firefighters at the scene had removed the keys from his Toyota Camry, but that didn’t stop him from fleeing. Rodriguez was able to use an unidentified tool to start his car. That’s when he allegedly drove toward Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic Kim Tae. Tae was able to jump out of the away to avoid being hit.
Soon after, officers spotted the fleeing car in the 7000 block of Bruton Road. A chase ensued and ended after Rodriguez slammed his car into a red Ford Mustang on Military Parkway.
Rodriguez has previously been convicted of drunk driving in 2008 and 2011.
