DFW AIRPORT (CBSDFW.COM) – When New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg abruptly reversed himself late Friday afternoon and canceled Sunday’s scheduled running of the New York Marathon, he caught runners all over the world by surprise.

Runners like Angela Austin of Krum, who got the news while waiting at DFW Airport for her flight to New York.  “I was sitting waiting on my flight and saw the breaking news that’s how we found out.

Austin was planning to run in what was supposed to be Sunday’s marathon. She has already paid all her fees, bought her airline tickets, and reserved her hotel room.

She’s not alone. There are a number of reports of runners flying in to New York from other countries only to be told after they arrived that there will be no New York Marathon this year.

The marathon had been dubbed ‘The Race to Recovery’ after Sandy came through earlier this week.  The race was expected to bring more than $340 Million to the New York economy.

New Yorkers were outraged over the decision to still hold the race, arguing it should have been canceled much earlier than Friday.
