Texas Rangers On Scene After Human Body Discovered In Trunk
VAN ZANDT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A gruesome discovery has been made in Van Zandt County.
A human body has been found in a travel trunk.
Van Zandt County Sheriff R.P. “Pat” Burnett, Jr. told CBS 11 News that a road crew found something like a rattan travel trunk on the side of the road. The discovery was made around Noon and police were immediately called.
The body was found on Farm-to-Market Road 47, about four miles north of the town of Wills Point. The roadway was shut down for hours as officers completed their investigation.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department released little information. Officials wouldn’t give an approximate age or even a gender of the deceased. Sheriff’s would only say the body discovered was not that of an infant.
Late Tuesday afternoon the Greenville Police Department released a statement saying that they had been notified by Van Zandt officials about the discovery of the body of an African American female. Their notification is significant because officials in the city have been searching for a missing 16-year-old girl since Friday. Alicia Chanta Moore was last seen getting off a school bus in Greenville, at the corner of Bourland and Walnut Streets.
After being called to Van Zandt County Greenville officials confirmed that they contacted Moore’s family to inform them tht a body had been discovered, but that no positive identification had been made.
The body was taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office and the trunk was transported to the Dallas Police Department Crime Lab.
The investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.
