FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – A whole lot of North Texans will be having a great Thanksgiving thanks to a local football star’s big event.
The Fort Worth Food Giveaway had cars lined up for blocks on Alton Road near South Hills Avenue just south of TCU.
Ladainian Tomlinson, former TCU and San Diego Chargers star football player, teamed with Albertson’s to give out 2,100 bags filled with canned goods, bread, turkey and cases of water.
Volunteers loaded cars at the drive-up event, while the line of vehicles spilled out into the street and stretched for blocks.
Tomlinson, who has done similar events for Thanksgiving in other cities for a decade, said the demand doesn’t surprise him.
“We’ve been doing this program for over 10 years in San Diego, New York and now here in Fort Worth,” Tomlinson said. “And everywhere we’ve been we’ve had no problem giving out thanksgiving dinners. And that tells you the kind of need that’s out there for these families.”
