NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CBS SPORTS) - The Texas Rangers have been talking to Josh Hamilton, but one source suggested talks are “on hold” at the moment. It is believed the holdup may have to do with the Rangers’ spirited efforts to land top free-agent starter Zack Greinke.
The Mariners, Red Sox, Phillies and Brewers also have shown interest in Hamilton. The Mariners are by no means giving up on Hamilton.
Hamilton has been seeking a deal for seven years or more. But most people believe he’ll have to settle for five or fewer. Some teams are believed to be considering vesting options to protect themselves.
The Rangers are long thought to have the inside track, and if their efforts for Greinke don’t pan out, they may well still sign Hamilton. To this point, it isn’t believed any of the other interested teams has shown a willingness to offer up an ultra-long contract.
Hamilton has said he prefers to stay in Texas. Though that seems to be up in the air at the moment.
