I love radio. It’s my first love virtually from the time I was born. I dreamed of being a DJ on legendary Top 40 radio stations like KLIF/Dallas, WLS and WCFL/Chicago, KHJ/Los Angeles, CKLW/Windsor ON (Detroit), and WABC/WNBC New York. And one of the things I love about radio today as an adult is the things they do around the holidays that only radio can do.
CBS Radio Dallas has a long standing and proud tradition of serving its listeners during the holidays with great programming and community outreach. 103.7 LITE FM (KVIL-FM) has been airing 24 hour a day Christmas music during the holiday season since mid November (give or take a few days). Not only does this temporary format change attract tons of listeners, it’s a nice change of pace from their normal adult contemporary music format. I ever remember back a couple of summers ago when the DFW area had that sustained heat of 100 degree plus days and for one day, KVIL switched to Christmas music (as a stunt of sorts) to get you in the spirit and think of cooler weather! That’s brilliant!
100.3, JACK-FM (KJKK-FM) is incorporating Christmas music into their playlist this month as well but they are a, shall we say, a different breed of songs that appeal to the JACK listener! Hehe!
Debbie Douglas, who reports afternoon drive traffic for our 50,000 watt blowtorch, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD, has her own internet radio show on http://www.smoothjazz1075.com called the “Global Groove Boutique” and this month she has been highlighting her special blend of Christmas music. You can catch her show Sundays at 11am on the Smoothjazz1075 website.
In addition to entertaining our audiences, serving our communities is also very important to our six radio stations. JACK-FM is involved this season with the Toys For Tots campaign. LITE FM and MEGA 107.5 (KMVK-FM) just concluded their annual radiothon for the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas and helped raise a million dollars!
This week, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD will, for the 34th consecutive year, invite listeners to donate to the KRLD Christmas Is For Caring, supporting the more than 500 residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities of the Denton State Supported Living Center (DSSLC). To donate, you may call the CIFC hotline at 214-219-1080 between now and December 14th from 7am-6pm. You can also visit http://www.christmasisforcaring.com, text “CIFC” to 20222 for a $10 donation, or you can mail a check to Denton State Supported Living Center, ATTN: Christmas Is For Caring, P.O. Box 368, Denton TX 76201-0368. The residents will receive their gifts and a visit from Santa Claus on Thursday, December 20th at a party at the DSSLC.
Since November 2, 1920, when KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh signed on as the first commercial radio station in the United States, radio has been serving Americans for over 92 years with news, information, and entertainment, while at the same time giving back to the communities they serve. KDKA, which was a Westinghouse station for years and is now part of CBS Radio family, is now NewsRadio 1020 KDKA. With its 50,000 watt signal, KDKA can be heard in 38 states, several Canadian provinces, and on KDKA-FM 93.7 on its HD2 channel. Now that’s coverage you can count on for years to come!
See you next time.
